The start of ‘Valentine’s week’ on Wednesday saw the prices of roses rising considerably in Dehradun. A number of individuals, particularly youngsters could be seen flocking to florists in the city. Regular customers at flower shops in the city said that the prices of roses skyrocketed by an average of 50 per cent with the start of Valentine’s week.

Commenting on the sale of roses, a florist Chander Gulati said that the demand for roses surges as Valentine’s week draws near. It is primarily the younger generation, particularly college students, who eagerly partake in the celebrations and purchase roses. He said that he encountered numerous customers on Wednesday morning enquiring about procuring roses in large quantities to celebrate the day. The heightened sales of roses inevitably lead to a corresponding escalation in its price, he said.

Another florist Renu Talwar said, “To celebrate rose day which marks the beginning of Valentine’s week, there was a significant surge in the sale of roses on Wednesday. It is a common trend for the price of roses to rise as Valentine’s week approaches, due to the uneven supply and demand factor. The main customer base during this week at florist shops consists of college students.”  She further added that the customers also show a preference for personalised rose arrangements that include chocolates, cards and other decorative items.

People could also be seen purchasing greeting cards and other gift items. A customer Veena Chachra emphasised that this week is not only meant to celebrate with romantic partners but also to make other loved ones including parents feel special. She said that she personally bought roses and a gift for her mother.
