Residents of Palaam celebrate Rohit’s win in Junior Asian Boxing championship

The residents of Palaam village in Tehri district are elated at the success of Rohit Chamoli who won a gold medal at the junior Asian boxing championship in Dubai. Rohit Chamoli (48kg) defeated Mongolia’s Otgonbayar Tuvshinzaya 3-2 in a closely contested final to clinch the gold at the championships in Dubai.

Rohit’s father Jayprakash Chamoli hails from Palaam village in Tehri district. He had gone to Chandigarh in search of work and settled there. Rohit and other family members later joined him in Chandigarh. Jayprakash currently works as a cook at a hotel in Chandigarh. Sixteen year old Rohit has cleared high school examination from a government school in Chandigarh. His grandfather Chandramani Chamoli (80 years) and grandmother Sattu Devi (73 years old) live in Palaam village.

Rohit’s father Jayprakash and aunt Sushila Devi said Rohit wanted to make a name for himself in the world of boxing since childhood. Rohit worked hard, diligently and patiently. He said that by winning a gold medal at the Junior Asian Championships, he has brought laurels to not only the nation but to the Tehri district also. Rohit’s cousin Meenakshi is also a boxer. When he saw Meenakshi boxing, he made boxing his goal. Earlier, Meenakshi trained Rohit in boxing who then was introduced to prominent boxing coach Joginder Kumar who has a passion for teaching boxing to children from poor strata and that too free of cost.
