The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has nominated the chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami as its candidate for the Champawat assembly by- election. The official declaration on Dhami’s candidature was done on Thursday by the national general secretary and in charge head office, Arun Singh after approval by the central election committee of the party.

It is learnt that the CM would file his nomination on May 9. The voting for the Champawat by election would be held on May 31.

The by-election in Champawat has been necessitated after the resignation of BJP MLA Kailash Gehtodi from the state assembly. He left his seat to pave the way for the entry of CM Dhami in the state assembly.

In the recently held assembly elections, CM Dhami was defeated by Bhuwan Kapdi of Congress from his traditional Khatima assembly constituency by a margin of 6,759 votes. Despite the reversal in Khatima, the ruling BJP came back to power in Uttarakhand by winning 47 out of 70 seats in the state assembly and the central leadership of BJP appointed Dhami as CM of the state for the second consecutive time.  As per the constitution the CM now needs to be elected to the assembly within six months.
