Rains & ruin continue- 12 dead, 188 roads blocked

Heavy rains, landslides and other related factors continued to cause death and destruction in Uttarakhand with at least 12 people dying and 188 roads being blocked in different parts of the State. Four persons died and seven were injured in Uttarkashi district when boulders and debris fell on three vehicles at Gangnani on Tuesday morning. 

The Rishikesh-Gangotri national highway 108 was blocked by boulders and debris near Dhrari and Pakod in addition to two State highways, one district road and 27 rural motor roads being blocked. One person died and one was injured in Rudraprayag district when a boulder fell on a motorcycle near Byungad on the Rudraprayag-Gaurikund national highway on Monday night. Four rural motor roads are reported to be blocked in the district. In the Dehradun district, three persons died and three were injured after the utility vehicle they were travelling in from Kalsi to Vikasnagar met with an accident after a boulder fell from the mountain on the Haripur-Koti route.

One national highway, five State highways, three main district roads and 43 rural motor roads were reported to be blocked in the district. One main district road and 28 rural motor roads were reported to be blocked in Tehri district. A total of 35 areas in Haridwar district suffered from waterlogging and the authorities had to come to the assistance of the residents in these areas. Twenty two roads were blocked in Chamoli district while three rural motor roads were blocked in Bageshwar and 37 rural motor roads were blocked in Pauri district.

In Almora, one person died and two were injured when the car they were in fell down the mountainside on the Almora-Ranikhet road. Nine rural motor roads are blocked in the district. Two State highways, one internal road and 11 rural motor roads were reported to be blocked in Nainital while one State highway and 16 rural motor roads were reported to be blocked in Champawat. Two border roads and seven rural motor roads were blocked in Pithoragarh district.
