Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Tuesday inaugurated the Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system prepared by the Transport department for the online monitoring of vehicles entering the State. He said that the department is also planning to integrate and share the data of the system with various departments including Goods and Services Tax (GST), police and tourism as it can be used for purposes like preventing tax evasion by vehicle operators and checking traffic violations and road accidents among others. He called the launch of the ANPR system in the State a good beginning for the observance of traffic rules and road safety. He said that the public should be made aware of ANPR camera installation across the State before issuing any challan. They should be sent warning SMS in the initial stage to ensure they follow rules from the next time.

The Transport secretary Arvind Singh Hayanki informed through a presentation that the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has made the online monitoring of vehicles mandatory by amending the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. He said that the department has eliminated all check posts formed earlier on the border of the State and has made a plan to install ANPR cameras in border areas for which a budget of Rs 4.61 crore has been approved by the State Road Safety Fund. The department has taken these decisions to ensure the proper implementation and execution of the electronic monitoring system across the State, said Hayanki.

He said that the department has started the process of integration to make the data received from ANPR portal available to the GST department as per the plan while data integration with other departments like Mining, Excise, Tourism, Urban Development, Forest and Police is also being considered. The data integration and sharing with other departments can enable the departments to use the data for their respective purposes, said the secretary. He said that the system is fully automated, which is also integrated with Vahan portal and E-Challan portal. Due to the automated system, challans will be automatically generated on the basis of the number plate of the vehicle as per the violation without any manual effort, added Hayanki.
