The police will conduct a fortnight long drive from February 22 across the State against those displaying titles and other invalid texts on the registration plate of their vehicles. The officials said that the police have observed many people displaying political, religious and caste related titles or nameplates on their private vehicles.

According to them, many such vehicle operators using illegal name plates have also been found to be involved in various criminal incidents in the past which can potentially happen in future too. The officials informed that it is illegal to display invalid name plates including displays of political, religious or caste related titles on the vehicles without any authorisation under the Motor Vehicles Act 1988 and Central Motor Vehicles Act 1989.

The State government had also issued a mandate in 2008 stating that no word, symbol or number must be displayed in the number plate or anywhere on a private vehicle’s body including the personal vehicles of government officials. The Uttarakhand High Court has also issued an order in this regard, added the officials. Though the police run regular campaigns against traffic violations and minimise road accidents across the State, a two-week campaign against such offenders displaying unauthorised texts and titles on the registration plates will also be commenced from February 22 as per the directions of the director of traffic directorate, Mukhtar Mohsin. The police will take strict action against all the offenders under this campaign.
