The police on Monday arrested 13 persons accused of illegal online betting on the ongoing cricket matches of Legends League in Dehradun’s Rajiv Gandhi International cricket stadium. The police recovered 17 mobile phones and Rs 45,300 cash which were being used for the betting. They had allegedly reached all the matches of Cricket World Cup and Legend League in the cricket stadiums of different States for illegal online betting, said the Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh. He said that the police received information about the presence of these accused in the stadium in Dehradun late on Sunday after which a police team reached there and arrested them without disturbing the ongoing game which was being played between Gujarat Giants and Urbanrisers Hyderabad. They confessed during the investigation that they had collected Rs six lakh from this illegal betting. The police froze 20 bank accounts in different banks in which they had deposited Rs six lakh. Singh said that the accused told the police that they had been betting online for a long time. They have a gang including two teams, one of which goes to watch the match where it is being held and the other team stays at home and spreads information about the online betting and collects money from the players. Singh said, “They said that to watch a cricket match in the stadium, they book tickets online for that row where it will be convenient for them to do their betting-related work. The gang takes money from its customers for online betting in advance. The team which is watching the live match continuously talks to other members sitting at home via mobile and gives information about every moment of the match in their code language of betting. Since there is a gap of five to seven seconds between the live telecast of the match, direct inputs from the stadium help them to place bets and they give prices to their customers accordingly for betting.” A case has been registered against them in Raipur police station under Section 13 of the Gambling Act and they will be presented before the court soon.
