AIIMS Rishikesh to start conducting liver transplantation operations

A symposium on liver transplant was organised by the department of medical and surgical gastroenterology of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Rishikesh on Monday. The institute that has recently received approval for conducting liver transplantation will start conducting the operations soon. 

In his inaugural address the president of AIIMS Rishikesh, professor Samiran Nundy said that India has become one of the leading centres for liver transplantation in the world. He traced India’s journey and highlighted how laws regulating organ donation and transplant came into existence. The director of AIIMS Rishikesh, Dr Meenu Singh, said that the liver transplantation has started in the hospital by close coordination and providing full support to the department of medical and surgical gastroenterology. 

 In his address the former director of PGI Chandigarh and the guest of honour, Dr Y K Chawla spoke about the challenges faced by government institutions in setting up a liver transplantation system and how to overcome them. He narrated his own experiences from his time in PGI Chandigarh where he started the liver transplantation programme. 

The head of the department of gastroenterology, AIIMS Rishikesh Dr Rohit Gupta spelled out his plans to start liver transplant in the institute by next year. 

 Renowned hepatologist, professor Shiv Kumar Sarin discussed selecting and preparing donors prior to the transplant in the programme.

 Liver transplant surgeon from Indian Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS) Dr Viniyendra Pamecha said that coordinated effort is required from physicians, surgeons and the administration to ensure a successful liver transplant.
