The transport department has issued over 1,500 challans for the violation of various traffic rules in the last fifteen days under the intensive checking campaign in Dehradun district. On June 22, the enforcement team of the Regional Transport Office (RTO) of Dehradun started this campaign to check traffic violations in the district due to which about 60 people have died this year so far in road accidents. Out of these 60 people, about 40 people died due to the accidents of two-wheelers.

Most of these accidents occurred in some accident prone areas of various cities of the district and according to the officials, the RTO is working on improving the situation in such locations. According to the assistant regional transport officer (enforcement), Rashmi Pant, the main cause for the occurrence of most of these accidents were found to be non-compliance of the basic traffic rules. She said that violation of traffic rules like riding without helmets, reckless driving, drunk driving and red light jumping cause severe accidents or even deaths every year. She also informed that most of the two-wheeler riders are penalised for not wearing helmets. On the other hand, car drivers are mostly fined for not wearing seat belts and talking on mobile phones while driving.

According to the officials, the enforcement team across the district penalised about 260 people for riding without helmets while about 100 people were fined for operating vehicles without driving licenses. Over 170 drivers were penalised due to pending taxes and about 300 vehicle owners were fined for not using high-security registration plates (HSRPs). The RTO also took action against the commercial vehicles overloading goods and passengers. Those driving without valid permits, fitness certificates and insurance documents were also penalised by the enforcement teams.

The regional transport officer (enforcement) Sandeep Saini, who is supervising the campaign, said that besides ensuring the proper implementation of traffic rules by people, this campaign is also being used to raise awareness among vehicle users. He also said that the teams from their respective areas are also providing inputs about the causes of accidents in certain accident prone locations which will help the RTO to take appropriate action to tackle the situation at all such places.
