Noted physician Dr Pandhi dies at 86

Noted consultant physician Dr Bhim S Pandhi died in Dehradun on Monday. He was cremated on Tuesday morning at the Nalapani cremation grounds in the presence of friends, well wishers, admirers and his peers. He had been ailing for some years now and was wheelchair-bound for the past few months.

Veteran journalist Raj Kanwar said that only in January 2019, Pandhi had celebrated 50 years of his uninterrupted golden practice. Suave and amiable in his disposition, he was equally popular both with his patients and peers alike. Kanwar said, “Dr Pandhi enjoyed the rare distinction of being the first full time postgraduate to have started private practice in Dehradun and was also the first Fellow in 1985 of the Royal College of Physicians in whole of Northwest India. Further, he had been actively involved with various social and professional organisations and service clubs including the Rotary Club. He was also the recipient of the fellowship of Indian Medical Association (IMA) Academy of Medical Specialists in 1985 and honorary fellowship of IMA, CGP in 1999.”

He had held various important positions in the IMA and its allied organisations. He was the president of the Indian Medical Association, UP in 1998-99. He was also a member of the central working committee of IMA since 1988. He was the founder-president of Indian Academy of Pediatrics and Association of Physicians of India. Dr Pandhi together with some of his colleagues at the IMA was instrumental in setting up a world class blood bank in Dehradun.

Together with his wife Florence, he was also a keen environmentalist. Dr Pandhi had been the chairman of IMA Standing Committee of Control of Pollution.
