Police arrest duo for defrauding ATM users

The Pauri police arrested two men accused of changing the ATM card and withdrawing money from the account of a person in Kotdwar. The police are searching for the third person accused of the crime who is absconding. According to the police, Durgapuri area resident Preeti Rawat had lodged a first information report in the Kotdwar Kotwali on February 27. The complainant had stated that she had gone to withdraw money from Durgapuri ATM on February 27 and found that two persons were already there. The duo won her confidence while she was withdrawing money and exchanged her ATM card while also managing to learn the PIN from her. The two unknown persons withdrew Rs 80,000 from her account, the complainant said. The police registered a case against unknown persons under sections 420 and 120 (B) of the Indian Penal Code.

The Pauri senior superintendent of police Yashwant Singh Chauhan instructed police personnel to crack the case and arrest the culprits. Additional superintendent of police Manisha Joshi constituted a police team under the supervision of circle officer Vibhav Saini and under inspector in-charge Vijay Singh.  After investigation and acting on tip offs, the police arrested Luvkush (24) and Parvesh alias Pappu (35) both natives of Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh. The police recovered 27 ATM cards, Rs 10,000 cash, two mobile phones and a two-wheeler without a license plate. The absconding accused has been identified as another Saharanpur native Rohit Singh. The arrested accused confessed during questioning that they used to keep a watch on ATMs and after identifying potential targets, exchange their ATM cards and learn their PIN to withdraw money from their accounts. The police are now also checking their past criminal record.
