Many opine that the government should have given the devices instead of transferring the money into accounts

After deliberating for long the Uttarakhand government has now decided that instead of providing laptops to the meritorious students of class X and XII and tablets to the college students it would transfer the amount directly into the accounts of the students.

It was decided by the state government to give laptops to the meritorious students of Uttarakhand Board for the year 2019-20 and a decision was made that laptops would be provided by the department, but till now laptops could not be purchased for the students. Therefore, instead of giving the devices, the government has decided to transfer money in students’ accounts so they can buy it themselves. This amount will be transferred within this week into the accounts of 125 students of class X and XII.

Similarly 1.25 lakh college students will get the benefit of the tablet scheme.

When The Pioneer sought the opinion of students and their parents many among them felt that the government should have given the devices instead of transferring the money as many students are not from a stable financial background and the money provided will be used for other requirements.

Sanjana Triwari, an undergraduate student said, “The schemes announced by the government are beneficial only if implemented properly. It is not wrong to say that the government only makes such announcements and nobody cares whether it is implemented or not.”  She added that the government cannot be trusted as announcements are made and then it is forgotten.

Vishal Pant, a class 12 student said, “This scheme is quite beneficial as we will be able to buy whichever model and version of the device based on our preferences.”

Ajay Bhatt, another graduate student, said, “The government should provide the tablets themselves since the money, with most probability, will be used for other things rather than buying a tablet.” He added we prefer smartphones over tablets nowadays since it is less costly and more convenient.

Soumya Joshi, a school teacher, said, “The initiative taken by the government is beneficial since many students were not able to study during the lockdown and online-classes period at that time. But in the end, everything depends on implementation.” She opined that the government should provide laptops directly instead of money as it is not necessary that this money will be used for the designated thing.

Aditya Singh, a college student said, “All government does is talk. It is not the first time the government announced such schemes at the time of elections. This time also the announcement is made and it will be delayed as usual.” He added that if the government wanted to help with finances then they should have made concessions in the tuition fees rather than transferring the money.
