The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) will remove 15 volunteers outsourced by the Health department to minimise the risk of dengue in vulnerable areas, said the chief municipal health officer Dr Avinash Khanna. He said that the chief medical officer of Dehradun district had directed to deploy some volunteers that can be sent in vulnerable areas to raise awareness among locals besides checking the condition of the area regarding the breeding of mosquitoes to help the MCD to take necessary action there like source reduction, using fogging and larvicide along with other preventive measures.

On the recommendation of the district malaria officer, the MCD deployed 20 volunteers as per the plan and decided to give them Rs 370 per day as an incentive to encourage them for the work and keep them motivated. These volunteers were also given training as part of this plan but 15 out of 20 volunteers are not working properly, said Khanna. “Many are not turning up to do the work and some are not carrying out their job properly. Our focus is to minimise dengue risk in the city and it cannot be done with such teams. Considering this, we have decided to remove 15 members. We will deploy new members who will be trained well before working in the field,” he said.

The MCD teams have so far inspected over 10,000 houses in the city as part of its anti-dengue campaign, added Khanna.
