The Doon Library and Research Centre will organise an exhibition on the occasion of the State foundation day on November 9 to showcase the Indian freedom movement and the Uttarakhand statehood movement through the eyes of the Garhwal and Kumaon press. The organisers have drawn the material in the form of press clippings from 1912 to the present from Yogesh Dhasmana’s archives which is used to trace the arcs of both movements.

The exhibition will offer a rare view into the publications of the courageous views of the editors as the freedom movement marched through the events of 1916, 1917, the massacre of 1919, the non-cooperation movement of 1920 to the Independence Day in 1947. The publications show that the principles of the regional press were well aligned with processes and objectives of the freedom movement and they took it upon themselves to be its voice to the people of the region. The exhibition will narrate the stories from the pre-independence years and about the motivations and actions of the citizens who mobilised under the Uttarakhand Kranti Dal floated in 1979 to the formation of Uttarakhand in 2000.

The exhibition will give people an opportunity to know about the freedom movement through the lens of Garhwal and Kumaon press which is not quite common. It would provide an insight as to how progressive social issues became the pillar on which the independence movement stood and gained momentum in the Garhwal and Kumaon region. The exhibition will be organised in Muse Art Gallery at Rajpur Road from November 9 to 30.
