The additional director general of police (crime, Law and order) V Murugesan suspended four police personnel for their alleged negligence during the Kanwad Yatra on Thursday. The four police personnel- additional sub-inspector (ASI) Sarvesh Kumar and head constable Yogesh Kumar from Dehradun, and constable Bhuvan Pandey from Pithoragarh besides, Constable Pravesh Chauhan from Haridwar were deployed in Haridwar as part of police’s security arrangements during Kanwad Yatra. The ADG reached Haridwar on Thursday to check the work arrangements of the police.

During this visit, the senior superintendent of police of Haridwar, Ajai Singh presented his report to Murugesan regarding the violations made by these policemen in carrying out their duties. According to the SSP, the ASI and head constable were found constantly absent from their duty while the constables Bhuvan and Pravesh were found drunk during their duty hours. Taking cognisance of the report, the ADG issued an order to respective SSPs to suspend these personnel immediately. He said that the police are taking all possible measures to ensure the safety and security of pilgrims and no negligence will be tolerated at any level.

The ADG also appreciated 11 police personnel and honoured them for their work in Kanwad Yatra so far. Talking about the work of these personnel, SSP said that on July 3, a person of a minor community hit a pilgrim’s Kanwar with his car after which the Kanwariyas started thrashing the driver. The three policemen immediately reached there and pacified the matter between both parties, said Singh. The police also arrested three smugglers with 170 bottles of country liquor from separate areas of Haridwar on Thursday. These accused are locals and were nabbed with the help of drones which are being used by the police to monitor security in the area during Kanwad Yatra, added SSP.
