In a monumental achievement for the space sector of India, the Chandrayaan-3, India’s third lunar mission executed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), embarked on its journey in the space after being successfully lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh, at 2.35 PM IST. As per information received from ISRO sources, this mission involves demonstration of multiple capabilities like reaching the orbit of the moon, making a soft-landing on the lunar surface through a lander and a rover-an unmanned robotic vehicle- coming out of the lander to study the moon’s surface.

ISRO sources further informed that just 16 minutes after the lift-off, the propulsion module successfully separated from the rocket and it would keep orbiting the earth five to six times with 170 km closest and 36,500 km farthest from the earth while moving towards the lunar orbit. It is further learnt that the landing would take place on August 23-24 after a 40-day journey.

Lauding the successful launching of the spacecraft, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is now in France, said Chandrayaan-3 had scripted a new chapter in India’s space odyssey. “It soars high, elevating the dreams and ambitions of every Indian. This momentous achievement is a testament to our scientists’ relentless dedication. I salute their spirit and ingenuity!” he tweeted.

Mention worthy, if this mission becomes successful it will make India the fourth country to achieve a controlled landing on the Moon after Russia, the USA and China.
