Five confirmed dead in Haldwani riots, authorities confirm

The situation in Haldwani remained tense but under control on Friday, a day after riots by members of a particular community which left five dead and several injured. The Nainital district administration confirmed the death toll on Friday. Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami also reached Haldwani a day after the violence and took stock of the situation. Dhami also enquired about the condition of the police personnel, government and municipal corporation employees and the media persons who were injured in the violence which took place in the Vanbhulpura area on Thursday evening.

The chief minister said that all the video footage and clues related to those who have broken the law and damaged government property are available. The process of identifying all the miscreants involved in this riot is underway and strict legal action will be taken against them, he stressed. Earlier in Dehradun, the CM held a high-level meeting with senior officials of the State administration and police. In order to ensure peace and law and order in Vanbhulpura area of Haldwani, the CM instructed the additional director general of police (Law and Order) AP Anshuman to camp in the affected area.  Taking strict cognisance of the violence and attack on the government employees, the CM has also given instructions to take strict action against the culprits. Dhami also appealed to the local people to maintain peace. He stressed that no one will be allowed to tamper with the law and order in the State. He said that the officials of the administration and police should remain alert at all times to maintain law and order in the area and strive to maintain peace and law and order in every situation.

Earlier, the district magistrate Vandana Singh informed the media that five persons had died in the violence which broke out after the authorities started demolishing an illegally constructed Madarsa and Namaz site in the Vanbhulpura area. She said that the rioters had also attempted to burn the police personnel alive in the police station. Strict action was taken by the authorities to clamp down on the rioters. The situation is under control in Haldwani. Meanwhile, internet services, road and rail services were affected in the Haldwani area on Friday.
