Eye infection & allergy cases rise in Doon amid fluctuating weather

PIONEER NEWS SERVICE | Dehradun

Eye infection and allergy cases have increased in Dehradun due to fluctuating temperatures and unpredictable rainfall, the eye specialists said. Recently, there have been notable variations in the weather, with clear sunny days suddenly giving way to rain and thunderstorms. These weather changes, combined with dust being stirred up by gusty winds, have contributed to a rise in eye allergy-related issues. To mitigate these problems, eye specialists recommend wearing protective eyewear outdoors.

Senior eye specialist at the Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) hospital Dr Sushil Ojha said that the fluctuating weather recently has led to a surge in eye allergies, causing a rise by 15 to 20 cases in the OPD compared to normal days. Common symptoms of these allergies include redness, itching and watering of the eyes. To prevent these issues, it is advised that individuals rinse their eyes and wear glasses when outdoors, among other precautions. He emphasised that children should refrain from playing outside for a few days due to changing weather conditions, particularly in the evening, as they are increasingly susceptible to eye allergies.

Another eye specialist, Dr Amit Singh said that the unpredictable rainfall and temperature fluctuations have led to a 20 per cent increase in cases of eye allergies and infections. He said that if the common symptoms of eye allergies including redness and itching progress to discharge, it may indicate a conjunctivitis infection. Singh highlighted that young adults, particularly those working in office settings, are particularly vulnerable to eye allergies during this time. To mitigate these risks, he recommended wearing protective eyewear, using lubricant eye drops when returning indoors, avoiding eye rubbing and consulting a doctor when symptoms appear.
