The expert committee on Uniform Civil Code (UCC) studied about 2,33,000 suggestions and interacted with more than 10,000 people while preparing the exhaustive report submitted on Friday.  To fulfill its pre-election promise, the Pushkar Singh Dhami government decided to set up an expert committee in its very first meeting of the State cabinet. Thereafter the five-member committee headed by justice (retd) Ranjana Prakash Desai came into existence on May 27, 2022.

Justice (retd) Pramod Kohli, social worker Manu Gaur, former chief secretary of Uttarakhand Shatrughna Singh and vice chancellor of Doon University Surekha Dangwal were the members of the committee.  The committee was mandated to examine all existing and relevant laws regarding marriage, divorce, right for property, inheritance, adoption and protection for implementation of UCC in the State.

The expert committee divided its work into two sub committees. One of the sub committees was tasked to prepare the draft of the code while the other invited suggestions from the public and set up interaction with people. A total of 43 public interaction programmes were held in different parts of the State. The committee launched a web portal on September 8, 2022 for inviting the suggestions and also sought suggestions on SMS and WhatsApp. The committee received a total of 2,32,931 suggestions which is equal to 10 per cent families of the State. The expert committee held 72 meetings for fulfilling the task assigned to it.
