The Municipal Corporation of Rishikesh (MCR) will start a massive campaign to distribute three pitchers to each family across the city to promote composting among local residents. The corporation is taking this initiative to ensure proper waste management at the source to minimise littering and resolve garbage disposal issues which is one of the main concerns of the civic body in terms of maintaining cleanliness. The corporation will also focus on getting a Water Plus city tag  in Swachch Survekshan 2023 conducted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) under its Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban. The assistant municipal commissioner of Rishikesh, RS Rawat told The Pioneer that MCR is taking various initiatives to improve sanitation facilities under SS23. He said that MCR will start by providing three pitchers to each family to start composting as the process is quite simple and easy but many are generally not motivated to adopt this practice in their daily life. “We want people to make composting a part of their routine. People with limited space in their homes can easily carry out composting through these pitchers as they occupy very little space. Since wet organic waste makes up a big proportion of the garbage generated daily, it will help immensely in waste management and locals would also get quality manure at their homes,” said Rawat. He said that the corporation is also working on getting the Water Plus city tag this year under SS23. The ministry gives Water Plus city tag to a city for maintaining cleanliness in water bodies under its administration. As per the protocol of MOHUA, waste water released from households and commercial establishments must be treated as per the standard procedure before releasing the treated waste water into the open environment. Rawat said that the MCR is working towards maintaining sanitary conditions to ensure that no untreated waste water is released into the environment. He said that the corporation would also felicitate those who would dispose of their garbage at source through means like composting to inspire others to adopt composting. It is pertinent to mention here that Rishikesh got 220th national rank in SS22 last year but the officials said they expect to be among the top 100 cleanest cities under the respective category in SS223.
