Experts stress on importance of mother tongue & folk culture

Experts spoke on aspects of mother language at an event organised on the occasion of the International Mother Language Day at Graphic Era Hill University on Monday. Noted cultural educationist professor DR Purohit and founder of PAHAL, Kamala Pant delivered their lectures on the folk language and culture of Uttarakhand. 

Purohit said that language is the most important part of culture and if language survives then any culture can survive on its own.  At the same time, he highlighted the local dialect used in the folk culture of Uttarakhand, Ramand, Jagar, Pandav dance.  He said that the terminology related to the traditional resources of Uttarakhand, like Gharat, agricultural equipment is dying out.

President of PAHAL Kamala Pant, working in the field of folk culture and language, said that the International Mother Language Day should not be limited to only formal programmes. “We have to put the mother tongue into practice by thinking concretely on it.  It should start at home, school and work,” she said.  Vice chancellor of Graphic Era Hill University, professor J Kumar, pro vice chancellor professor Jyoti Chhabra, registrar Himanshu Dhulia, teachers and students were also present in the lectures which were held in the virtual mode.
