Snakes visiting villages around Corbett more often as summer heat rises

Wednesday, 24 APRIL 2024 | PNS | RAMNAGAR

The movement of snakes in human habitations appears to have increased in the areas neighbouring the Corbett national park with consistent rise in summer temperatures. About a dozen cobras and other snakes have been rescued and released in the wild during the past two days alone.

Snake expert and head of Save The Snakes Society, Chandrasen Kashyap said that as the summer heat rises, snakes have started entering rural areas on the borders of Corbett. In the past two days, more than 15 cobras and other snakes have been rescued from Dhela, Sanvalde, Dhikuli, Ramnagar and other areas adjoining Corbett. These snakes were released in the wild with the help of the Forest department. He appealed to the people to desist from killing snakes which enter inhabited areas and to inform the authorities so that the reptile is rescued and released away from inhabited areas. He said that when a snake enters a home in the rural areas the people inform volunteers of his society, who reach the site to rescue the snake. He claimed that so far a total of 50,000 snakes have been rescued from inhabited areas and released in the wild with the help of the department by Save The Snakes Society in a number of years. The Corbett deputy director Diganth Nayak said that Kashyap and his team are working consistently in coordination with the department to rescue snakes.
