Covid spike in U’khand-Positivity rate rises fourfold in four weeks

 In an indication that the contagion of Covid-19 has witnessed a spike in the last few days, the data shows that the positivity rate of the disease has increased  about four times in the last four weeks.  The positivity rate of Infection rate is obtained by dividing the number of total tests done by the number of positive cases. It is an indication of the prevalence of the virus in the population at any point of time and a positivity of rate of five or more is considered alarming for Covid-19.

 The data released by  the Social Development for Communities (SDC) foundation shows that the positivity rate was 3.52 during July 3 to 9. The state health department reported 337 new cases of the disease by doing 9564 tests in this period. In the next week (July 10 to 16) the department detected 598 cases by doing 9370 tests with a positivity rate of 6.38. In the week corresponding to July 17 to 23, the positivity rate jumped further to 10.37 (1160 cases from 11,185 tests). In the week ending July 30, the state health department reported 1860 new cases of the disease by conducting 12,555 tests with a positivity rate of 14.5. The number of active cases of the disease has also witnessed a steady increase in the last three to four weeks. In the week ending July 9, the active case count was 361 which increased to 577 and 1040 in the next two weeks. In the week ending July 30, the active case count jumped to 1553.

The founder of SDC foundation Anoop Nautiyal said that an increase in positivity rate is a big concern and the authorities should continue to closely monitor the situation and ensure compliance of testing, treating and implementing Covid appropriate behaviour.
