District administration to conduct month-long survey to identify dairies using oxytocin

The Dehradun district administration will conduct a month-long survey to identify the dairies that use oxytocin on milch animals. The authorities have already sealed a dairy at Kanwali Road late  on Tuesday evening for using oxytocin on cattle. In a joint operation of Uttarakhand Environment Protection and Pollution Control Board (UEPPCB), Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) , Food Safety and Drug Administration (FDA)  and the police headed by the district administration, the police seized and rescued 15 cattle before sealing the dairy.

According to member of Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animal (SPCA),  Rubina Nitin Iyer, while in office, the previous Dehradun district magistrate R Rajesh Kumar had ordered to shut the dairy in December last year which was not executed since then by the department concerned. After a meeting with the current DM Sonika about the matter on August 8, the DM directed all the authorities concerned to take action against such dairies across the district which violate norms set by Central and State governments, informed Iyer. The additional district magistrate (Administration) Shiv Kumar Baranwal also informed that all the seized cattle have been rescued by MCD and shifted to their Gau Sadan in Selaqui. He said that to ensure dairies are operating as per the norms, all departments concerned have been issued orders to conduct surveys of dairies and examine their condition.  “Strict action will be taken against the culprits if the officials find any violation during the survey, especially the use of oxytocin on milch animals,” added the ADM.
