Congress claims credit for making Centre announce caste census

PIONEER NEWS SERVICE | Dehradun

The Congress has claimed that the Union government has bowed to the pressure from the Congress and decided to conduct a caste census in the nation. Addressing the media here on Sunday, the Pradesh Congress Committee vice president Suryakant Dhasmana said that in the Nyay Path resolution passed in the All India Congress Committee’s Ahmedabad session, the party had clearly stated its intention to undertake a nationwide movement seeking a caste census.

Before this, leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi and leader of opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge had strongly urged the government to conduct a caste census in the nation. The ruling party had strongly opposed this at the time and had rejected this demand. “However, the Central government had to bow down to the pressure from the Congress and announced that a caste census will be conducted.

This is a major victory for the Congress. Union minister and senior BJP leader Nitin Gadkari had openly spoken of kicking those who conduct a caste survey while MP and former minister Anurag Thakur had made fun of Rahul Gandhi for demanding a caste census. However, now the Central government has had to take the decision of conducting a caste census due to pressure from the Congress. The BJP is now shamelessly trying to take credit for this.

The people belonging to the deprived sections of the society know the truth and the BJP cannot fool the people on this issue,” Dhasmana said.
