Dehradun to get AI-enabled CCTV network for crime and garbage monitoring

The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) is planning to install an AI-enabled CCTV network across the city. The system will use artificial intelligence to identify offenders based on their gait and movement, even if their faces are covered, the Dehradun mayor Saurabh Thapliyal said. He said that the MCD has been planning installing the CCTVs with a budget of Rs five crore but the installation process has been delayed slightly as the corporation is in advanced talks with several companies to finalise the technology.
The MCD plans to coordinate with the Police Headquarters to monitor the entire system effectively, he said. “The AI-integrated surveillance will help identify not only those who commit crimes but also individuals who dump garbage in public areas. We want to integrate our CCTVs with an AI system to ensure cleaner streets and safer neighbourhoods,” he said. The mayor also informed that the corporation has also removed over 16,000 metric tonnes of garbage from city drains and rivers, including the Rispana and Bindal, since January but most of it was removed only in the past two months.
The MCD is also mapping drains in waterlogging-prone areas and deepening them ahead of the monsoon to improve water flow and reduce flooding. Thapliyal said that necessary measures are being taken to prevent waterlogging on roads during monsoon. Besides this, the mayor also stated that the MCD will revive its three dispensaries located at Rajpur Road, Rajeev Gandhi Complex and within its own premises in June.
The dispensary on Rajpur road is almost ready and will be opened soon for the public. Thapliyal said that it was decided in the board meeting that the corporation will revive its old dispensaries that have not been functional for the past eight years. He said that these dispensaries will help the public to get medicines at affordable prices without any hassle.
