In latest news from Uttarakhand, the State chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami met the Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Though the official sources said it was a courtesy call, the political observers are attaching importance to the meeting. It is learnt from some sources that the matter pertaining to the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) to be enforced in the State figured in the discussion prominently. Besides, the CM is supposed to have apprised Shah of the recent political developments of the State. Importantly, the matter of long-pending expansion of the Dhami cabinet is believed to have figured in the meeting with the CM asking for Shah’s suggestions.

It is learnt that the CM during his Delhi sojourn met the head of the panel, formed to prepare the draft of the UCC, Ranjana Prakash Desai and some of its members. Notably, the State government is expecting that the panel will submit the final draft of the sensitive matter to it any day. Earlier, it was expected that the panel would submit the draft by June 30. But as it did not happen, it was expected that draft would be submitted by mid-July. But the initial pace seems to have slowed down now as the draft involves far-ranging changes pertaining to women rights to marriage and property inheritance.
