Officials have been directed to look into the possibility of making the proposed elevated roads on Rispana and Bindal rivers six-lane. The chief secretary Sukhbir Singh Sandhu issued this instruction while chairing a meeting with officials wherein the feasibility survey of the project was presented. Sandhu said that after construction, these two elevated roads will help in reducing the congestion considerably on the roads of Dehradun city. He further told officials to also look into the possibility of constructing roads for vehicular traffic on both the banks of the rivers. These will be useful for residents of settlements near the rivers, he added.

Principal secretary RK Sudhanshu, secretary Arvind Singh Hyanki and other officials concerned were also present in the meeting. It will be recalled here that in the past, the chief secretary had directed the officials to conduct a feasibility survey to ascertain the scope for building elevated roads on stretches of the Rispana and Bindal rivers in the provisional state capital. The feasibility survey was conducted for construction of an elevated road on the Rispana river from the Rispana bridge near the Vidhan Sabha to Sahastradhara and on the Bindal river from the Haridwar bypass to near the Max hospital on Mussoorie road.

Among other projected benefits, these planned elevated roads are expected to drastically reduce traffic congestion caused on city roads especially by movement of tourist vehicles. It is pertinent to mention here that despite various plans, the State government has so far failed to either remove encroachments from the two rivers- Rispana and Bindal- passing through various parts of the city nor check their alarming contamination and revive the rivers.
