The bursting of crackers on Deepawali has worsened the air quality in various parts of the State. Experts emphasised that asthma and heart patients should take extra precautions during this period. The celebration of Deepawali brought the air quality index down to poor in Dehradun and Kashipur while the air quality deteriorated in other parts of the State too. Experts emphasised that asthma and heart patients should take extra precautions during the days following Deepawali. The AQI levels in the city have been linked to an increase in cases of asthma, allergies and upper respiratory infections among people, the doctors said.

Commenting on the data of AQI in Doon affected due to Deepawali senior physician at the district hospital Dr Pravin Panwar said, “The AQI in Doon has been affected by Deepawali celebrations. The cases of pollution related allergy have increased immediately after the Deepawali celebrations. The fireworks during Deepawali pollute the air, which ultimately affects people’s health. This year, cases of asthma allergy have increased among asthmatic people due to the pollution caused by crackers during Deepawali. Additionally, upper respiratory infections like colds and coughs have also increased among people. To overcome this people, especially asthmatic individuals, must wear masks while going out.”

He further said that people with asthma should always carry an inhaler with them, especially during this time. Additionally, he emphasised that the consumption of sweets during the festive season has also caused acidity problems among people. To alleviate this, people should stick to light foods for a few days, he added.

Physician Dr Anshika Jain said that pollution has a significant impact on people who already suffer from asthma. After Deepawali, cases of asthma, allergies and respiratory infections have increased. To manage these health problems, she advises people to limit their time outside and wear masks when they do go out, especially during this period of high pollution, she added.

“Asthma and heart patients need to be very cautious about their health during the post-Deepawali period. Asthmatic individuals are advised to carry their inhaler and medication with them at all times,” Dr Jain said.
