Tuesday, 08 AUGUST 2023 | PNS | DEHRADUN

In latest Uttarakhand news, the Election Commission has announced the date of the Bageshwar Assembly by-election. The seat fell vacant following the demise of the incumbent MLA and the State cabinet minister Chandan Ram Dass. The by-poll will be held on September 5 and the votes will be counted on September 8. Notably, the Election Commission   announced the schedules for by-elections for seven Assembly seats spread across six states.

As per the schedule for Bageshwar by-poll, the nominations can be filed from August 10 to 17 and the last date for withdrawal of nominations is August 21.

While it will be a challenge for the ruling BJP to retain this seat the opposition Congress, now buoyed by the recent formation of the INDIA bloc to take on the saffron might head-on in the 2024 general election, is likely to pull out all stops to wrest it from the BJP. Aware of the importance of holding on to its bastion in view of the general election drawing near, the ruling BJP has made the cabinet minister Saurabh Bahuguna as the by-election in-charge.  It is learnt from the State BJP sources that the party may make the deceased minister’s son the candidate for this by-poll.
