U’khand cabinet minister Chandan Ram Dass passes away

Uttarakhand cabinet minister Chandan Ram Dass died in the Bageshwar district hospital on Wednesday. He was 65. His cremation would be done at the confluence of Saryu- Gomati Rivers at Bageshwar at 11 am on Thursday.

 The minister who was holding the social welfare, transport and small scale industries in the Pushkar Singh Dhami cabinet was suffering from cancer from some time. On Thursday, he was rushed to the Bageshwar district hospital following a complaint of breathlessness. Dass was admitted to the ICU of the hospital but he could not recover and passed away.

The State Government has declared three-day mourning in the state and instructed that the national flag will fly half-mast in the government offices of all the districts during this period. Besides this, all government offices will remain closed in the district concerned where the last rites of Dass will be performed.

Dass entered active politics in the year 1980 and in 1997, he became chairman of the Municipal Council of Bageshwar.  On the advice of senior BJP leader Bhagat Singh Koshyari, Dass became a member of BJP in 2008. He was elected MLA for the four consecutive terms from Bageshwar (reserved) constituency (2007, 2012, 2017 and 2022). Born in Dwarahat in Almora district, the family of Dass settled in Bageshwar. He is survived by two daughters and two sons.
