Authorities struggle to resolve stray animal issue in Doon

Stray cattle continue to pose problems to the public while themselves facing dire situations and the risk of accidents on the roads of provisional state capital Dehradun. Apart from the stray cattle, street dogs also cause some inconvenience to people in some localities of the city.

Local resident Akansha Shrivastava said, “My friend and I were on Rajpur Road and a couple of street dogs ran towards our vehicle and in order to avoid them we met with an accident. We are not the first victims of such an accident as many people have faced the same.”

Office goer Anand Bisht said, “At times, street dogs run in the middle of the road out of nowhere and as a driver, it becomes difficult to handle the vehicle and decide whether to save them or ourselves.” He added that the authorities should resolve the issues caused by stray dogs and cattle.

Prateek Sharma, a social worker, said, “People should adopt street dogs rather than buying puppies from shops and breeders. If you cannot afford to adopt the stray dogs then you should at least feed the animals so that they do not die of hunger.”

Meanwhile, many citizens opine that stray cattle pose a bigger inconvenience than stray dogs. Cattle abandoned by their owners pose traffic hazard while also facing accident risk and risk to health resulting from scavenging garbage for food. Senior municipal veterinary officer Dr DC Tiwari said, “The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) is consistently working to solve this problem. The corporation is taking care of 1,400 cattle which were abandoned by their owners.” As for the street dogs, he said that the Animal Birth Control programme is run by the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun and since 2016, more than 30,000 surgeries have been performed to control the population of street dogs. He also added that MCD will continue to work towards solving this problem in the future
