That the contagion of Covid-19 has hit the top gear in Uttarakhand can be understood from the fact that about 91,000 new cases of the disease were reported in the last two weeks only. This number constitutes 38 per cent of the total cases of the disease reported so far in the state.

The first case of Covid-19 was detected in the state on March 15 last year. The last two weeks ( April 25 to May1 and May 2 to 8) also saw the bulk of the deaths caused by the disease in the state.  The data of the Social Development for Communities (SDC) foundation suggests that a total of 1,446 deaths occurred during the last two weeks. A total of 3,548 deaths have occurred in the state till May 8 which means that 41 per cent of deaths occurred in the last two weeks only. An analysis of the data also suggests a very high positivity rate in the week ending May 8.

The founder of SDVC foundation Anoop Nautiyal said that the positivity rate in the week 60 is 24.33 per cent which is extremely high. “Every fourth person tested in Uttarakhand is tested positive. The state needs to increase its effort to curb the pandemic many folds. We all know that the ground reality is far grimmer than data, ‘he said.
