U’khand Cabinet approves compensation policy for Joshimath families

 The much awaited policy of the state government for the compensation and rehabilitation of the affected families and people in the disaster affected Joshimath was approved by the State cabinet in its meeting on Wednesday.

Informing about the policy, the secretary disaster management Ranjit Sinha said that the compensation of the residential buildings would be computed by adding cost index in the plinth area rates of the Central Public Works Department (CPWD). In the amount calculated by adding the two, the depreciation cost of the buildings would be reduced and the compensation would be paid. He said that the rate of the compensation of land would be decided after the reports of different institutes working in Joshimath are received and added that it would be put up before the meeting of the next cabinet. The secretary said that five options would be provided to the affected families for the compensation. The affected families can receive the compensation of the building now and get the compensation for land after its rates are decided or the affected family can opt for a piece of 75 square meter of land apart from the compensation of the building.

Similarly the affected family can claim for a new house. The owners of shops or commercial properties can get compensation for the building now and land later after the rates are decided and can also opt for a piece of land ( up to 15 square metres) after receiving the compensation of the building. The secretary said that a provision of payment of Rs two lakh has been made in the policy for such persons who had  rented shops in the disaster affected area. Sinha said that the compensation rates for retrofitting of the buildings located in the safe areas would be decided after the reports of different institutes are received.
