The leader of the opposition (LoP) in the Assembly Yashpal Arya has said that the recent spell of rains and storms have hit the farmers of the State hard and the State government should adopt a sympathetic attitude towards them.

In a letter written to chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, the LoP said that rains have damaged standing crops  both in the mountainous areas and in the plains of the State. It has also affected the vegetables and fruits in different parts of the State. Arya said that a farmer always lives in fear and a sense of insecurity surrounds him. He said that the fact is that the irrigation canals damaged during the disaster are yet to be repaired.

The prices of diesel, petrol, pesticide, seeds and fertilisers have increased and when the farmer brings his produce to market, he does not get the right price. The spell of rains has hit the farmers already reeling under many problems. Arya said that the insurance companies are also exploiting the farmers and claims of past years are yet to be settled by them. These companies are earning crores of rupees in profit in the name of the crop insurance scheme. Arya demanded that the State government should adopt a humanitarian and empathetic attitude towards the problems of the farmers.
