Only a proactive approach can help in mitigating the impact of disasters, said chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. He was speaking after inaugurating an international conference on use of modern technology in disaster management here on Tuesday.

Dhami said that Himalayan States are vulnerable to various types of natural disasters which can result in considerable loss of life and property. Earthquakes are also a very big danger for Uttarakhand and special focus should be laid on developing early warning systems using the latest technology to address such disasters. The CM said, “After the 2013 disaster, the reconstruction works executed in Kedarnath on war footing under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s guidance have not only ensured reconstruction works but also made Kedarnath more picturesque.

Learning lessons from the Kedarnath disaster and other disasters after that, our Disaster Management department will succeed in developing a system based on its experiences and support from institutions concerned, which will help Uttarakhand and other States during disasters.”
