The Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Karan Mahara has accused the State government of deceiving people on the subject of tax collection in the newly created local bodies. He said that there are 102 urban local bodies and tax is being collected from 69 bodies. Mahara said that the Urban Development department has directed that the process of tax collection should start in all the bodies.

The PCC president said that the BJP government had created new urban local bodies with an assurance that no tax will be imposed on the people residing in these bodies for a period of ten years. However the Dhami government has started giving notices of tax collection from new urban local bodies after only five years of setting up of these local bodies. Mahara said that the notices have been issued to Tehri, Selaqui, Shivalik Nagar, Bhagwanpur, Dhandera, Pandli Gurjar, Rampur, Imlikheda, Ghansali, Chamiyala, Gaja, Tambgaon, Tapowan, Satpuli, Thalisain, Naugaun, Pipalkoti, Chiniyalisaur, Kedarnath, Ranikhet Chiliyanaula, Ukhimath, Tilwara, Bhikiasain, Garud, Chaukhutia, Kapkote, Banbasa Berinag, Gangolihat, Nagla, Nanakmatta, Gularbhoj and Lalpur.

He said that the Urban Development department has already implemented a circle rate based system of calculating house tax. In this system the house tax will increase automatically with the circle rate of the area. Mahara said that this system is flawed and anti-poor as the circle rates are usually increased after construction of some big housing society.
