PIONEER NEWS SERVICE/Haridwar

The Bharatiya Janata Party MLA from Ranipur in Haridwar district Adesh Chauhan and his niece were sentenced to six months each by the court of a special CBI magistrate on Monday in a case related to the custodial assault on her husband and providing false evidence. Three police personnel were also sentenced by the court to one year imprisonment each for taking an individual into illegal custody. One of the police personnel has expired since the start of the case proceedings. Talking to The Pioneer in the evening, the MLA said that he had secured bail in the case on the same day and will approach the higher court to appeal against the verdict.

Chauhan’s niece Deepika had filed a complaint of dowry harassment at the Gangnahar police station in 2009 against her husband Manish. It was alleged that some police personnel had taken the accused into illegal custody and beaten him on the MLA’s instructions due to his political influence. The CBI was directed by the Uttarakhand High Court to probe the matter and subsequently a chargesheet was filed by the CBI. The special CBI magistrate’s court on Monday sentenced Chauhan to six months for the custodial assault and his niece to six months too for providing false evidence while the police personnel were sentenced to a year each.
