The State’s Rural Development department has registered 5,000 new women self help groups (SHG) under the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM) in the year ending March 2022. This year the department has set itself a target to form 10,000 new SHGs and provide bank linkages to 15,000 women SHGs in the state. The programme aims to empower rural women by providing financial help to their SHG. There should be a minimum of five women in an SHG.

The additional secretary and commissioner of Rural Development, Anand Swarup told The Pioneer that apart from providing bank linkage for loans the department also provides marketing support to these SHGs. He informed that recently an outlet was opened at the Dehradun airport.  This shop is eliciting a good response from the people, he said. The department provides marketing support to the SHGs involved in making artefacts, handicrafts and processed food items. Swarup informed that 10 such shops would be opened on the Char Dham Yatra route also. He said that one such outlet would be opened at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA) in Mussoorie. The purpose is to provide an opportunity to the officers coming from all parts of the country for training in the academy to have a glimpse of art, craft and culture of Uttarakhand, he said.

In Uttarakhand there are a total of 36,000 SHGs of women. The rural development department is planning to provide bank linkages to 10,000 SHGs this year. By providing bank linkage the SHGs are entitled for Cash Credit Limit (CCL) and other schemes of the government.
