5 dead, 2 missing- 66 road accidents on Holi

At least five people died and two were reported missing during the festival of Holi on Monday. Besides this, 66 road accidents were also reported on the occasion. Three people died in Haldwani on Monday morning.

According to the officials, a car from Delhi with four people was being driven to Kathgodam from Lalkuan when it went off the road and hit two senior citizens who were taking a morning walk. Both men Jagjivan Singh (68) and Puranchand Sharma (60) died at the spot along with Sanyam Kumar (25) who was driving the car. The three people in the car sustained serious injuries and were admitted to the hospital for treatment.

The officials said that they are yet to ascertain the cause of the accident. They have sent the bodies for post-mortem. In another accident in Dehradun’s Vikasnagar area on Monday, a utility vehicle driver hit a man Vikram Singh (32) on a motorcycle who died on the spot. The officials said that the driver fled from the spot and was reportedly rash driving when he hit the motorcycle, as per the local people. The police are looking for the driver, they added. In Haridwar, a man Ajay (22) drowned in the Gangnahar on Monday and died. The officials said that Ajay had come from Roorkee with his friends to take a bath in Ganganahar. He fell into the canal when his foot slipped during bathing.

The police called the search and rescue team of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) that retrieved his body from 15 feet below the canal. Besides this, two men from Haryana and Punjab also drowned in the Ganga river in Rishikesh’s Tapovan area on Monday. The SDRF conducted a search operation but could not find their bodies till late on Tuesday, the officials added.
