All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIIMS) Rishikesh claimed to have succeeded in conducting the first major liver resection surgery utilising robotic technology in Uttarakhand.

Providing details, the assistant professor in the department of Surgical Gastroenterology, Dr Sunita Suman said that condition of a 34-year-old patient Laxman Singh from Rudraprayag who had been diagnosed with a rare liver cancer known as a Malignant Mesenchymal Tumor had prodded the decision to proceed with liver resection surgery. He underwent a Robotic-assisted right posterior sectionectomy, involving the resection of around 35% of the liver. The postoperative course being uneventful, the patient was planned for discharge on postoperative day 5, she added.

The assistant professor in the department of Surgical Gastroenterology, AIIMS Rishikesh, Dr Lokesh Arora said that Robotic technology facilitated enhanced precision and minimal invasiveness, leading to faster patient recovery with reduced surgery-induced discomfort.

The associate professor and robotic gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary surgeon Dr Nirjhar Raj said that the incorporation of robotic technology has revolutionised their approach, enabling them to achieve superior outcomes while ensuring patient safety and comfort. “Most liver resections are done with an open approach, which would require a long abdominal incision and a prolonged post-operative stay of around 10-14 days. Patient safety and recovery are our prime concerns and robotic surgery helped us achieve this goal. The patient displayed excellent results in recovery and was discharged within a week. The patient’s recovery process was easy with barely any pain,” he added.

Sounding happy over the achievement, the medical superintendent Dr R B Kalia said that the facility’s team of surgeons, anesthetists and medical professionals had demonstrated exceptional skill and commitment throughout this challenging procedure.

The director AIIMS Rishikesh’s Dr Meenu Singh said that the achievement had highlighted the institute’s position as a hub for cutting-edge medical advancements. She further said that the surgery had been performed free of cost under the Aayushman health scheme.
