Second Frontier Hill District Children’s Science Festival to start in Gopeshwar on October 9

Hundreds of school children and teachers along with scientists and experts will converge in Gopeshwar in Chamoli district on October 9-10 for the second Frontier Hill District Children’s Science Festival being organised by Uttarakhand State Council for Science and Technology (UCOST). UCOST director general Durgesh Pant informed the media that the purpose of the second science festival for children in border districts is to encourage their scientific temperament, expose them to ideas, practical science and technology and facilitate networking among the children of these districts.

Addressing the media here on Thursday, Pant said that the border districts of Uttarakhand need to be linked to science and technology, starting with the youngsters. Involving the children and motivating them towards science and technology is the basis for securing the future of the State, nation and the world, he said.

School children from 33 blocks in six border districts underwent competitions at the block and district level and those selected will compete at the State level in Gopeshwar. About 250 school children and up to 50 teachers apart from other invited experts and guests will attend the two-day event. “In the first such event we held in Champawat district last year we saw how it provided an opportunity to children from the block level in Uttarkashi and Pithoragarh to interact with each other, network and learn more. Instead of holding events in Dehradun, we are organising such events in the frontier districts. Last time we saw how the children of border districts were enthralled when they saw constellations using telescopes and scientists explained aspects of the subject- many of the students are still in contact with each other,” said Pant.

Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami will inaugurate the event along with Education minister Dhan Singh Rawat. UCOSt joint director DP Uniyal, science city advisor GS Rautela and UCOST PR manager Amit Pokhriyal were also present in the Press conference.
