While only one out of 100 people infected by Covid-19 died, according to WHO 2019 report, one out of every three road traffic accident victims dies. Noted orthopaedic surgeon and Padma Shri awardee Dr BKS Sanjay, said this while speaking at a training workshop for teachers organised by State Council of Educational Research and Training at Patanjali Yogpeeth in Haridwar.
He said that just like the Covid pandemic has affected the whole world, road traffic accidents are killing many people who are bread earners for their family. He stressed on the need for measures to prevent these accidents. If the public observes basic precautions like following the traffic rules and government puts little more efforts to enforce the traffic rules then the epidemic of traffic accidents can be effectively controlled, he said.
Orthopaedic surgeon and India Book record holder Dr Gaurav Sanjay said that one-fourth of road accident victims die and only a quarter are able to recover despite good treatment, while others have some residual disability. Due to this, not only of the victims but also the economic condition of the country is deteriorating. The poor are made poorer by road traffic accidents, he said.
“The virus causing Covid-19 is so microscopic that we cannot catch it or punish it, but the factors causing road accidents- drivers in 90 per cent cases, can be caught by the traffic police and such people should be penalised as per law without leniency,” he added.
