Haridwar police have taken legal action against 1,293 persons for intoxication and hooliganism at religious locations across the district in the past one week during the ongoing Char Dham Yatra. The police have taken this action under the operation Operation Maryada under which they also arrested 75 accused on charges of disturbing law and order.

The Haridwar senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh said that the police have been conducting the campaign to ensure protocols are being followed by pilgrims and visitors in tourist spots. “Everyone is welcome in the holy land of Haridwar but all are expected to act as per the sanctity of the religious places by maintaining religious decorum at every place they visit. We started this campaign under Operation Maryada to especially nab those who indulge in frequent consumption of alcohol, hookahs and create ruckus at religious places during the Char Dham Yatra. The people arriving in the district must be sensitive towards the sanctity of the religious locations in Haridwar,” said Singh.

He said that the police have taken strict action against such offenders and have collected a fine of over Rs 3.5 lakh in the past seven days along with taking action against 1,293 persons besides arresting 75 accused. He said that the police teams are keeping an eye on pilgrims arriving during the Char Dham Yatra and will continue to take action against those involved in illicit activities, especially at religious locations.
