The cancellation is the fallout of the Joshimath land subsidence crisis

The Ski Association of Uttarakhand (SAU) has decided to cancel the National winter games scheduled to be held in Auli of Chamoli district in February this year. The continued land subsidence in Joshimath city became the major cause for the inability expressed by the SAU to organise the games.  Due to land subsidence in Joshimath, the ropeway from Joshimath to Auli has also been put out of operation.

Although currently there is no snow in Auli, sufficient snow is required in the slopes to hold the competition. Expressing its inability to organize the competition this year, the SAU has sent letters to the national and international organizations. The secretary of the SAU, Praveen Sharma said that the decision to cancel the games was taken in view of the Joshimath crisis. He added that slopes are devoid of snow and the ropeway too is not operational.

National Winter Games were proposed to be organized in Auli from February 2 to 5. Under this, racing skiing competitions approved by the International Ski Federation were to be organized. Earlier also National Winter Games have been successfully organized in Auli. Under the competition, players from all over the country apart from Uttarakhand participate in the women’s and men’s categories.
