The Himalayan hospital conducted a swap kidney transplant successfully. Bindu and Reena gave one kidney each to each other’s husbands giving Ishwar Chand and Yogesh Kumar a new life.
Rudraprayag resident Ishwar Chand (36) was on hemodialysis due to kidney failure and kidney transplant was the only option. His wife Reena was ready to donate one of her kidneys but it was not possible due to lack of blood group match. Yogesh Kumar (42), a resident of Rudraprayag’s Bani village, another patient suffering from the same disease, was also undergoing dialysis. Yogesh’s wife Bindu was also keen to save her husband’s life but their blood group did not match.
Nephrologist Dr Vikas Chandel of Himalayan Hospital who was treating both these patients told the families about cross kidney transplant.
After an investigation, it was found that the blood group match of Bindu with Ishwar and Reena with Yogesh was found compatible. A team of transplant surgeons swung into action. Specialised doctors team comprising Dr Kim J Mamin, Dr Shahbaz Ahmed, Dr Vikas Chandel, Dr Rajiv Sarpal, Dr Shikhar Agarwal, Dr Karamveer Singh, anesthetic team comprising Dr Parul Jindal, Dr Abhimanyu Pokhriyal, Dr Deepti Mehta, Dr Divya Agarwal, Dr Aarti Rajput, Dr Jyoti and radiologist Dr Mamta Goel were involved in the surgery.
After a long and complex process kidney transplant was successfully carried out in a single day. Bindu’s kidney was transplanted to Ishwar and Reena’s kidney to Yogesh. After this successful swap kidney transplant, both the kidneys are functioning normally. The vice chancellor of Swami Rama Himalayan University, Vijay Dhasmana and chief medical superintendent Dr SL Jethani congratulated the entire team for successful swap kidney transplant.
CMS Dr SL Jethani said that Himalayan Hospital offers a world class facility for kidney transplant. In comparison to other hospitals, kidney transplant is done in Himalayan Hospital at very affordable rates. He informed that the hospital has an experienced and dedicated team for kidney transplant. Nephrologist Dr Vikas Chandel informed that last year, the transplant team of Himalayan Hospital had done 25 successful kidney transplants including three swap transplants. All three swap transplants have been successful.
