In view of the threat posed by the Omicron variant of Covid-19 the Uttarakhand government has imposed a night curfew in the state. The curfew would remain enforced from 11 pm to 5 am. In an order on Monday to the officers of the administration and police, the chief secretary of Uttarakhand S S Sandhu has said that the Covid-19 prevention guidelines should be strictly enforced.

As per the order all the health care workers, nurses, paramedical staff and those associated with essential services would be exempted from the curfew. The transport vehicles involved in interstate transport of goods would also remain exempted. On production of travel tickets the travelers coming from Railway stations, bus stands and airports would be allowed to move during the curfew hours. The private vehicle owners would be allowed movement during curfew hours on production of valid ID and reason for movement. In the order the CS has said that all industries located in urban and rural areas shall operate with strict adherence to SoPs and Covid-19 safety protocol.

Reacting to the decision of the authorities to impose night curfew the founder of Social Development for Communities (SDC) foundation Anoop Nautiyal said that due to extreme cold conditions very few venture out during night. He said that instead of a night curfew the authorities should explore ideas to minimize the huge assembly of people in markets, weddings and rallies. He suggested that the wearing should be made compulsory.
