With the mercury dipping, the demand for electric heaters has increased in the city. In light of this, experts have emphasised that excessive use of heaters can have adverse effects on one’s health. Breathing difficulties and dryness in the throat and eyes are some of the negative effects of using electric heaters excessively. In comparison, oil heaters are considered to be more reliable in terms of health when compared to blowers, the experts said.

Talking to The Pioneer, senior physician at the district hospital Dr Pravin Panwar said that prolonged use of heaters can negatively impact an individual’s health. The reduction in moisture levels caused by the heaters indirectly affects the body, leading to feelings of suffocation and the dryness of the eyes and throat. Another potential consequence of using heaters is the release of carbon monoxide, which can be harmful to people. “So, I would suggest using electric heaters in intervals and ensuring proper ventilation by placing them near windows. Additionally, people suffering from asthma must avoid the usage of electric heaters,” Dr Panwar added.Senior eye specialist Dr Sushil Ojha told this correspondent that he has encountered numerous instances of ocular dryness resulting from the excessive utilisation of heaters in the city. The use of a heater reduces the level of moisture available, leading to dryness in the surrounding environment and a decline in oxygen levels. It is advisable to limit the duration of heater usage and take breaks to prevent dryness and potential visual disturbances. Further, elderly individuals should refrain from using heaters, as their tear quality tends to weaken in this stage of life. Instead of using blowers, it is recommended to opt for oil heaters, as they are more favourable, Dr Ojha said.
