Khatima rejects, Champawat elects Dhami by record margin

The electorate of Champawat elected Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami with a thumping majority in the by elections the result of which were declared on Friday. However, about three months ago, on March 10, Dhami was heartbroken when he faced a stunning defeat in Khatima. He was defeated by the officiating president of Uttarakhand Congress Bhuwan Kapdi by a margin of 6,759 votes in Khatima. Though Dhami lost the election, he led BJP to a two third majority in assembly and he was re-elected as CM of the state. In the by-election of Champawat he registered the biggest ever victory in the history of the state when he crushed Congress candidate Nirmala Gehtodi by a margin of 55,025 votes.  The biggest victory in a by-election in the state before Friday’s result was in the year 2012 when the Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna of Congress defeated Prakash Pant of BJP by a margin of 39,954 votes in Sitarganj. This seat was vacated by the BJP MLA Kiran Mandal for  Vijay Bahuguna of Congress.

Similarly Narayan Dutt Tiwari of  Congress won the Ram Nagar by-election in the year 2002 by a big margin of 23,200 votes. He got 32913 votes as compared to 9693 received by Ram Singh Bisht of BJP.

Harish Rawat who contested the Dharchula by- election in the year 2014 had defeated Bhau Dutt of BJP by a margin of 20,604 votes.
