The trees planted in the Kairwan village in Rajpur block of Dehradun on the occasion of world environment day four years ago have taken the shape of a small forest.  Thousands of saplings were planted in this village in 2018 by the villagers, forest department and school children in presence of then chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat. These trees were planted on the banks of river Rispana under the river rejuvenation programme. On Sunday the former CM was invited by the ‘ Devbhoomi Vikas Sansthan’ to address a conference on global warming in Kairwan village.

On reaching the village Rawat looked very happy on witnessing the saplings that had now grown up as small trees. Speaking on the occasion he said that the developing forest of the village is an example of community participation in environmental conservation. “ When saplings were planted here the soil was rocky and it was a difficult task to ensure their survival but soil was arranged and the plants were continuously looked after,’’ he said.

The former CM emphasised on rain water harvesting and gave the example of Jalgaon in Maharashtra where water is scarce but it now accounts for 20 per cent of banana production of the country.

The director of Forest Research Institute Arun Rawat said that Kairwan village is an example of how governments can work with public participation.

The director of Uttarakhand Space Application Centre (USAC,) MPS Bisht said that everyone should come forward for conserving the environment and planting trees.

The mayor of Dehradun Sunil Uniyal Gama, Rishikesh mayor Anita Mamgain, Doiwala MLA Brij Bhushan Gairola and others were present on the occasion.
